چکیده

Olefin cross-metathesis has been demonstrated to be a modular pathway for synthesis of a series of functionalized cellulose esters. As a proof of concept, cellulose acetate was acylated with two terminally olefinic acid chlorides, pent-4-enoyl chloride and undec-10-enoyl chloride, providing olefin-terminated cellulose esters with different side-chain lengths. These ω-unsaturated cellulose esters were then reacted with a variety of cross-metathesis partners, including acrylic acid, methyl acrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate, poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate, and allyl alcohols, using Hoveyda–Grubbs’ 2 generation catalyst. Complete conversion to cross-metathesis products was achieved in reactions with acrylic acid or acrylates using 3–5 mol% catalyst at 40 °C within 1 h. We further demonstrate successful hydrogenation of these α,β-unsaturated esters and acids, thereby eliminating the potential for radical-induced crosslinking during storage.

A general model for selectivity in olefin cross metathesis.

In recent years, olefin cross metathesis (CM) has emerged as a powerful and convenient synthetic technique in organic chemistry; however, as a general synthetic method, CM has been limited by the lack of predictability in product selectivity and stereoselectivity. Investigations into olefin cross metathesis with several classes of olefins, including substituted and functionalized styrenes, seco...

Synthesis of functionalized vinyl boronates via ruthenium-catalyzed olefin cross-metathesis and subsequent conversion to vinyl halides.

Functionalized vinyl pinacol boronates suitable for Suzuki cross-coupling reactions are synthesized using ruthenium-catalyzed olefin cross-metathesis of 1-propenyl pinacol boronate and various alkenes, including functionalized and 1,1-disubstituted alkenes. The resultant boronate cross products are stereoselectively transformed into predominantly Z-vinyl bromides and E-vinyl iodides. The vinyl ...

Highly efficient conversion of plant oil to bio-aviation fuel and valuable chemicals by combination of enzymatic transesterification, olefin cross-metathesis, and hydrotreating

Background The production of fuels and chemicals from renewable resources is increasingly important due to the environmental concern and depletion of fossil fuel. Despite the fast technical development in the production of aviation fuels, there are still several shortcomings such as a high cost of raw materials, a low yield of aviation fuels, and poor process techno-economic consideration. In r...

Monotelechelic Poly(oxa)norbornenes by Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization using Direct End-Capping and Cross Metathesis.

Two different methodologies for the synthesis of monotelechelic poly(oxa)norbornenes prepared by living ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) are presented. The first method, termed direct end-capping, is carried out by adding an internal cis-olefin terminating agent (TA) to the reaction mixture immediately after the completion of the living ROMP reaction. The second method relies on cr...

Crosslinking of gelatin by ring opening metathesis under aqueous conditions - An exploratory study

Ring-opening metathesis catalysis has received little attention as a means to functionalize or crosslink biopolymers in water since the required catalysts are not usually stable under these conditions. However, biopolymer solubility suggests such a procedure. We show that Grubbs 1 and 2 generation catalysts (in emulsion) as well as a water-soluble Hoveyda-Grubbs catalyst can be applied to cross...
